The environmental issues associated with cosmetic packaging, often obscured by beautiful designs, are now coming to the forefront. Recent investigations reveal that a substantial amount of cosmetic packaging circulated in South Korea is, in reality, difficult to recycle, often ending up as 'pretty waste.'

These recycling challenges are primarily attributed to factors such as colored plastics, composite materials that blend glass with metal pumps, and small-sized containers. Even when consumers diligently separate their waste, most of these items are rejected at sorting facilities, perpetuating a vicious cycle of incineration or landfill disposal.

Consequently, both the government and the beauty industry are moving to implement stringent regulations, such as mandating the use of recycled materials, and developing self-help measures. Notably, the EU is introducing powerful regulations, including mandating the attachment of material identification and disposal instruction labels on all beauty packaging by August 2026, and requiring the adoption of refillable systems by 2027.

These shifts necessitate technological innovation and investment from K-Beauty brands for the development of sustainable packaging and the adoption of refill systems. This implies that only brands demonstrating eco-friendly competitiveness will earn consumer trust and achieve success in the global market.
